The Green Pit Viper is one of Vietnam’s most interesting but also dangerous snakes. It lives in many parts of the country, from the cool mountains in the north to tropical forests in the south. A well-known place where it can be found is the Son Tra Peninsula near Da Nang. Many tourists visit Son Tra for its beautiful views and wild monkeys, but few know that this area is also home to this bright green snake.

The Green Pit Viper has a striking green color that helps it hide perfectly among leaves and branches. It often has yellow or red stripes along its body. Most of these snakes are about 60 to 80 centimeters long. During the day, they stay still, resting in trees or bushes. At night, they hunt. They use special heat-sensing pits on their face to find animals like frogs, lizards, birds, and small mammals.

Even though the Green Pit Viper does not usually attack humans, it will bite if it feels threatened or if someone steps too close. Its venom is very dangerous. A bite can cause strong pain, swelling, and bleeding, snakebites can be serious, and people need quick medical help. Antivenom exists, but it is not always easy to find in remote areas.

In Vietnamese culture, snakes are often seen as protectors of the forest. However, some people still use snake parts in traditional medicine, which can be harmful to wildlife. Nature experts warn that these snakes are important for the ecosystem because they help control small animal populations.

For visitors to places like Son Tra, it is important to be careful. Wear strong shoes, stay on walking paths, and use a flashlight at night. The Green Pit Viper is a beautiful but dangerous part of Vietnam’s wild nature—something to respect, not fear.
