Son Tra peninsula currently has at least 231 insect species, including 113 butterfly species, belonging to 10 families, and 39 beetle species, belonging to 13 families. Among them is a rare species, the Golden Birdwing (Troides aeacus), classified as VU (vulnerable) in the Vietnam Red Book and Appendix II of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Insect species are diversely distributed, mainly at elevations from 250m and above, in areas such as Bai Cat Vang, Suoi Om, Vong Canh Hill, Ban Co Peak, etc. (Excerpt from the book "Son Tra - Da Nang's Natural Treasure", GreenViet, 2024).

Butterfly species play an extremely important role in maintaining biodiversity. They help pollinate flowers, promoting the diverse development of plant species.

In recent years, we have been very worried about the decline in the number of bees in nature, which will lead to many risks for plant pollination. There have been many films and elaborate photo collections designed to raise community awareness about the importance of bees and stopping the use of pesticides in agriculture.

However, a recent study by Dr. Richard Walton from University College London (UCL) on the activity of moth species around ponds in the agricultural area of Norfolk shows: 45% of the night moth they tested were carrying pollen originating from 47 different plant species, including some species rarely visited by bees and butterflies. The research group concluded that night moth species do not tend to select and pollinate certain favorite flower species. Instead, they do this work with all the flower species they randomly encounter along their flight path. In addition, night moth species pollinate flowers not only through their proboscis or snout but also on their fur.

Their research shows that night moths supplement the pollination work of plant species during the daytime. This helps maintain the diversity and abundance of plant species. Night moths serve as a backup for biodiversity, helping increase crop yields.

Butterflies, especially night moth species, are tiny creatures that have not received much attention, not only because they are not frequently present in our lives, but also because very few artists have enough patience to capture beautiful and unique moments of this animal group. Moreover, to be able to take pictures and shoot videos of these super small and extremely human-sensitive species, special photography and videography equipment is also needed, requiring the artists to spend a lot of time, effort and money to own and use.

On the first working day of the new Year of the Dragon, VEN cordially invites you to admire the Son Tra butterfly collection, photographed by our photographer Hoang Xiec. The photo set will surely bring you some "breathtaking" moments of surprise at the unique, strange beauty of the butterfly species.
