A Bird That Nests in a Dent in the Sand, on aBeach That Is Vanishing

The Little Tern lays its eggs straight onto open sand at the mouth of the Thu Bon, in a scrape a few centimetres deep. It has chosen the one strip of the Hoi An coast that the sea is eating from the front and the resorts are closing off from behind.
A Little Tern weighs about as much as a bar of hotel soap [1]. It hunts by hanging over shallow water on fast, flickering wingbeats, then folding and dropping head-first after a fish the length of a finger. And when it comes to breed, it builds nothing. The female settles on open sand above the tide line, shuffles out a shallow depression, and lays two eggs into it [1],[2]. No stick, no cup, no cover. On the Hoi An coast that dent in the sand has to survive six weeks of a Central Vietnamese summer, on a shoreline that lost 230 to 240 metres of its width in a single decade [3], in front of a beach that now draws millions of visitors a year [4].

The species has been confirmed here from photographs. Almost everything else about how it uses this coast is
unrecorded.
• A common bird in an uncommon position
Global abundance is the first thing that gets this bird dismissed, and the first thing to set aside. Sternula albifrons is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, and the listing is not in doubt: it breeds across Europe, Africa, Asia and
northern Australasia and shows no sign of approaching the thresholds for a threatened category [5],[6]. The same assessment records the global population trend as decreasing [1]. Both are true at once. A species can be secure across
three continents while one breeding beach quietly stops producing chicks, and the second event will not register in the first number.
Least Concern - globally, with a decreasing population trend
Vietnamese law does not single it out either. The species is absent from the rare forest fauna listed in Decree 84/2021/ND-CP, and no listing was found for it in the Vietnam Red Data Book [7],[8]. What covers it is broader: Directive 04/CT-TTg of May 2022 prohibits the hunting, trapping, transport and trade of wild and migratory birds nationally [9]. The protection is general, not targeted.
Tracing the species through those lists is complicated by its names. The bird is nhan nho in Vietnamese, while chim nhan is the general word for terns and returns unrelated species; literature before roughly 2005 uses Sterna rather
than Sternula [6]. East and Southeast Asian breeders are assigned to the subspecies S. a. sinensis [10], but no source retrieved confirms the subspecies of the Hoi An birds.

Little Tern habitat on this coast is a narrow band of open sand running along the shore either side of the Thu Bon river mouth at Cua Dai, together with the shifting sandbars inside the estuary; Cu Lao Cham, the protected core of the surrounding biosphere reserve, lies well offshore. What is not in doubt is how the bird feeds, and that settles where it can live. Plunge-diving is a visual technique: the bird must see a small fish through the surface, judge the drop and hit it. Water clarity therefore sets a hard limit on
where feeding is possible, and disturbance that stirs sediment or churns the surface reduces capture success. Depth matters too: shallow water pushes small fish nearer the surface, within reach of a bird that cannot reach far down. The prey is correspondingly small: at two Portuguese colonies the diet was dominated by sand smelts and gobies [11]. Clear, shallow, fish-rich water beside bare sand is a narrow requirement, and river mouths are among the few places
supplying all of it at once.
• A nest that is a dent in the sand
The nest is the strategy, and the strategy is to be invisible rather than defended. Across the range it is a scrape or natural depression in open ground, unlined or lined only with shell fragments and plant debris [1],[2]. Clutch size is two or three; among 147 nests studied in Saudi Arabia the range was one to three, and at a Singapore colony two was usual [1],[12]. Incubation runs 21 to 24 days, shared by both parents [1],[12]. The eggs are densely spotted in dark brown and
pale lavender, which against sand and shell grit makes them very hard to see [12].
That camouflage is the whole defence, and it dictates where the nest goes. Little Terns choose fully exposed sites with no cover; every one of those 147 Saudi nests was in the open, a median of 13 metres from the nearest bush [1]. The logic is a trade: cover would hide the nest, but also the approaching predator. From an open site the incubating adult sees a threat while it is still distant, slips off the eggs, and leaves the predator searching blank sand with nothing to mark the spot [1]. The birds apply the same reasoning to their own debris: once a chick hatches, an adult carries the eggshell well away, because its white inner surface would advertise the nest [12].

Chicks are semi-precocial: blind and partly downy at hatching, fully covered within a day, moving within hours [12]. What they do with that mobility is not run. Observers in Singapore described chicks lying motionless until they heard the adults’ all-clear call, then freezing flat again at any sign of danger; the same researchers, who had marked every nest with pickets, reported constant danger of treading on chicks, because a downy chick pressed into sand disappears [12]. Fledging takes about 20 days [12]. With incubation, that leaves eggs or flightless chicks on the ground for roughly six weeks per attempt.

Terns nest in colonies and mob intruders collectively, but the effect here is limited: the species relies more on egg crypsis than aggression [1]. A colony of small terns can drive off a heron. It cannot drive off a dog, and it cannot make a person watch where they put their feet.
The cost of the strategy is heat. A scrape on bare sand offers no shade, and embryos develop within a narrow optimum of roughly 36 to 40.5 degrees [1]. Where ground temperatures at Saudi nests ran from 25 degrees at night to
over 54 at midday, adults raised nest attendance above 95 per cent through the hottest hours, angled their bodies to shade the eggs, and soaked their belly feathers before sitting again [1]. The Singapore observers recorded the reverse: a clutch that failed to hatch, probably from ground heat, after the adults were repeatedly put off it [12]. This is what turns an apparently harmless disturbance into a dead egg. An adult flushed off a nest at midday is not merely inconvenienced. It has stopped being the shade.
• The river builds the beach, and the river has been cut off
The habitat the terns need here is manufactured by the Thu Bon. The river runs about 198 kilometres from mountains inland to the sea at Cua Dai, and the sand it carries forms the beaches, spits and shifting bars at the mouth [13]. Satellite analysis back to 1975 shows how mobile that system is: sandspits have formed, welded, been flushed away and re-formed, and the river’s right bank has shifted roughly 250 metres south in four decades [14]. Terns here are not using a fixed site but a landform the river rebuilds and the sea takes apart.

The rebuilding has slowed. Eighteen reservoirs have been built in the Vu Gia Thu Bon basin, and mean annual sediment load in the Thu Bon fell by 23.8 per cent after the dams compared with before [15]. Extraction has taken more: provincial figures put sand mining in the basin at 443 million cubic metres between 1990 and 2007, continuing at 0.3 to 3.2 million cubic metres a year to 2017 [15]. Dredging at the river mouth itself has been identified as a direct cause of the erosion downdrift [14].
The seasons decide what happens to the sand that remains. The rainy season runs roughly August to November and delivers around 80 per cent of the annual rainfall; it coincides with the typhoon season, and storm tracking from
1964 to 2014 recorded 35 typhoons and tropical depressions making landfall between Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam [3].

Little Terns can only nest on this coast in the dry half of the year, because the storm and monsoon season from August to December would take any nest on open sand, and that dry half is also when the beach fills with visitors, so eggs and flightless chicks sit on the sand through the busiest months. Breeding stages are drawn from regional studies in Singapore, inland Korea and the Arabian Peninsula, as Vietnam-specific timing is unpublished; storm and monsoon timing is for the Quang Nam coast; beach use reflects the Da Nang and Hoi An summer visitor season.
Lay the breeding cycle over that calendar and the arithmetic of the year appears. Vietnam-specific breeding dates have not been published, but regional records agree closely: May to July at a Singapore colony, April to July at an inland Korean site, late March to early July in the Arabian Peninsula [12],[16],[1]. The nesting window falls in the dry half of the year, the only half in which a nest on open sand could survive at all. It is also, precisely, the half in which the beach fills: Da Nang, which now administers Hoi An, forecast 6.2 to 6.5 million visitor arrivals in local accommodation over June to August 2026 alone [17]. The birds and the crowds are not sharing those months by coincidence. Both follow the same weather.
• Squeezed from the sea and from the land
Start with what one walker does. In experiments at 30 Little Tern nests in a tourist-heavy dune system in the Algarve, a jogger produced the longest flight initiation distance, followed by a lone walker, then two walkers in conversation [18]. Work on the closely related Least Tern in the United States supplies the geometry: a pedestrian walking directly at a nest flushed the incubating bird with near certainty at both 100 and 50 metres, while someone walking past rather than towards it flushed it far less often [19]. Direction of approach matters more than distance, and each flush compounds, stripping shade from eggs at the hottest hour and leaving camouflaged chicks exposed exactly when a foot is most likely to land on them [12].

Water takes the nests that survive the beach: storm surge and high tides drown scrapes placed too low, and the seasonal 30 to 40 centimetre rise here is more than enough to reach a nest on a low estuary bar [3].
Erosion removes the habitat rather than the clutch, and at Cua Dai it is severe and well measured. Shoreline analysis of the Quang Nam coast over 1990 to 2019 recorded its single worst value, minus 42.4 metres a year, immediately
north of the Cua Dai estuary [20]. On that same shore, one study reports a total retreat of roughly 230 to 240 metres between 2001 and 2010 [3].

The shore immediately north of the Cua Dai river mouth is retreating an order of magnitude faster than the Quang Nam coast as a whole. The four rates are not directly comparable, because each covers a different stretch of coast and a different measurement window; they come from a shoreline-change analysis of Quang Nam province [20], an assessment of Cua Dai beach [21] and a study of the Cua Dai estuary [3]. That last study reports both a total retreat of 230 to 240 metres for 2001 to 2010 and an average near 35 metres a year, figures which are not fully consistent with each other.
The response to that erosion is what closes the trap. Resort operators along the eroding stretch built seawalls to protect their properties, and by 2010 the retreating shoreline had reached those walls [14]. Here a fact about hotels
becomes a fact about birds. On an undeveloped coast a retreating shoreline does not destroy a beach: the beach migrates landward with it and the strip of bare sand travels intact. A seawall holds the landward half still while the sea keeps taking the seaward half. The beach is not protected. It is pinned in place and then drowned, and the nesting strip is squeezed out between a wall it cannot cross and a waterline that keeps advancing.

The nesting strip is the bare sand above the wrack line and below the vegetation line, and it is narrowed from both sides at once: the shoreline moves landward while seawalls and resorts stop the beach migrating with it, and recreational use presses seaward from the other direction. • What protection exists, and what it actually covers
On paper the coast sits inside an internationally recognised conservation area. The Cu Lao Cham and Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve was designated by UNESCO in May 2009 and covers 33,737 hectares [22]. Read the zoning, though,
and the geography of protection separates from the geography of the birds. The 11,560-hectare core zone is the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area, well offshore; the beaches, wetlands, tidal flats, dunes and estuary of Hoi An sit in
the 20,660-hectare buffer zone [22], managed under the UNESCO model for compatible use rather than exclusion. The nesting habitat is inside the reserve and outside its protected core, at once the buffer zone of a biosphere reserve and the front lawn of a resort strip.
Responsibility has also just changed hands: Quang Nam province was merged into Da Nang city on 12 June 2025 and Hoi An became a ward [23], with the reserve now administered by the enlarged city [24]. A coastal management duty
that has recently moved between authorities is not one to assume is being exercised.
What works elsewhere is unglamorous and cheap. Three years of monitoring at Ria Formosa in Portugal found that protective measures, warning signage plus weekend wardening, were the most important predictor of nesting success, with nests up to 34 times more likely to succeed where they were in place; success was also higher earlier in the season, so protection concentrated at the start of the window buys the most [25]. Symbolic fencing, a strand of rope on light posts with signs, is the standard tool because it can be moved as the birds move and put up only once a colony forms [26]. Reviews find it works best with signage and patrols, and that restricting dogs has a measurable effect of its own [27]. None of this requires closing a beach. One note on this article itself, since the vagueness is deliberate: because eggs and chicks on open sand are lost to foot traffic, dogs and vehicles, it gives area and season only at coarse resolution and names no active nesting beach.

The Little Tern is not a rare bird, and it has not been driven to the edge of anything. It is a common seabird doing what it has always done, in a place where the ground it does it on is being subtracted from two directions at once.
The bare sand it needs is the strip the sea is claiming and the strip the seawalls have fixed in place, and a bird whose entire nest is a depression above the tide line has no third option. What happens at the Thu Bon mouth will not move the species a category on any global list. It will decide whether terns still hatch on this coast, and that is a different question, answerable only here.
